Chromium is involved in carbohydrate, lipid, protein, and nucleic acid metabolism. Chromium, in inorganic forms, is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The amount of inorganic chromium absorbed ranges from 0.4 to 3 percent. The total chromium content of a corn—soybean diet can range from 750 to 1,500 ppb, but most of this is probably unavailable.

Recent interest has focused on the potential use of the organic chromium complex to increase carcass leanness.

Larger litters at birth have been reported for sows fed supplemental chromium. In one large trial, farrowing rate was increased when first and second parity sows were fed 200 ppb chromium beginning on the day after breeding through farrowing.

The inconsistency of biological responses to chromium could be related to the bioavailability of the chromium found in traditional feed ingredients, the duration of feeding, and the chromium status of the pigs.

In Cenzone CHROMIUM YEAST, soluble chromium are fed to growing Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast which have been starved of the element chromium. The subsequent hyper-accumulation of the mineral incorporated into the yeast cell makes that mineral 100% biologically available. The chromium tightly bound within the cell, then when the element concentration in the yeast reaches about the level of 1,000ppm, its growth starts to slow down. Then the cells are harvested and passed through the process of concentration, ultra-filtration, drying and grinding to form a fine powder.

Chromium yeast is more available and contain a greater bioactivity due to their high resistance to detrimental interaction with other feed ingredients. It also will increase minerals retention, absorption and tissue distribution.

The role of chromium yeast in increasing lean meat was proved by participation of Chromium in glucose metabolism by enhancing the effects of insulin. Insulin is secreted by specialized cells in the pancreas in response to increased blood glucose levels, such as after a meal. Insulin binds to insulin receptors on the surface of cells, which activates the receptors and stimulates glucose uptake by cells.

Conclusion:

The pigs fed with 300ppb Chromium from CHROMIUM YEAST significantly increased both lean meat and weight gain about 6.9% and decreased the back-fat of pigs by 26.15%.
